The perplexity to choose between the two career deciding entrance exams (IES and GATE) is dense. A mainstream engineering graduate falls prey to this confusion very often. IES gives you the chance to join the engineering services offered by the government and enjoy lifetime perks whereas GATE serves you with high package jobs. We will look at three perspectives for both IES and GATE and would leave you with this information to decide your career path.
1IES vs. GATE – Perspective #1 (THE HERCULEAN LEVEL)
Skeptics have suggested that the IES examination is somewhat tougher than the gate examination as IES selection process demands both academic and personality excellence. So, it is no less than a rollercoaster where each arena of your skill is tested. It is a step by step procedure which primarily requires you to clear the examination and then reach the personality test.
On contrary, the questions that you encounter in the GATE examination will be tough to solve than that of IES. GATE entrance examination questions are concept oriented. You should have good problem solving capabilities for that. On the other hand, most of the questions in IES are formula based. Also, in GATE, you have to solve 65 problems in 3 hours. That means on an average around 2.5 minutes per question which is fair enough. On the other hand, in IES you are given 120 questions in 2 hours i.e. 1 minute per question. That means, in GATE, you get almost 2.5 times more “time” per question. But the level of question compensates it anyway
2IES vs. GATE – Perspective #2 (THE HEN OF GOLDEN “JOBS”)
The Indian engineering services hold an estimable position in the society. Usually, IES Candidates will be awarded job in the sector where they have specialized engineering degree. Also, candidates will be placed as an Assistant executive engineer in different departments initially. After having at least 3 or 4 years of experience, they can work as an executive engineer which is equivalent to Under Secretary Govt. of India. Those who do have more than 20 years of experience can be promoted to the post of chief engineer Level-1st. And as the experience year rises to 32 years or more you will be recruited as the Secretary to the Govt. of India. Working for the government has its own perks.
While talking about the after GATE opportunities, if you get a good score in the examination you are open to the best recruiting companies with the best illustrative packages. GATE open your doors to PSU’s too. A job in PSU’s can ensure you perks of govt. salary and engineering advances. You can also work with govt. bodies like DRDO, INDIAN NAVY, IAF, BARC etc. through the sponsorship program which runs for 2 years.
3IES vs. GATE – Perspective #3 (THE FINAL SHOWDOWN)
It is ultimately your decision to choose between the two and work hard for your goals. IES and GATE both are difficult to crack but both offer the best career options for any graduate. The basic thing before you go for any examination is the objective behind it. You need to understand the objective of the examination and have vision of your career. When it comes to IES Examination, the recruitment examination is conducted with the objective of job procurement in the central government departments of engineering like the Indian Railway Stores Service, Indian Defense Service of Engineers & Railway Service of Engineers.
Whereas, GATE is an entrance examination for admissions into post-graduation programs like ME/ M.Tech in IITs, NITs and other prominent engineering colleges. But, candidates with high GATE score can also apply for various posts in PSUs.
In a nutshell all these facts are to provide you with the basic information so that you can make your choice diligently with wider aspects in consideration and of course your individual interests and long term goals.
